Facing any type of criminal charge in Georgia can be scary. Your future may feel uncertain. Retaining a criminal defense lawyer may be the best way to stay in control of what is to come.

Hiring the right lawyer to represent your criminal defense is critical to the overall success of your case. You should feel confident in the law firm you choose. Search for the following four things to give yourself the best odds of success.

  1. Local representation

One of the first things to find out is whether the attorney represents clients in Georgia. Each state has different criminal laws. Your attorney must have a license to practice in the state that has jurisdiction over your case. You should also check for board certification in Georgia. Certification from the State Bar of Georgia is a mark of a law firm’s excellence and accomplishments.

  1. Practice area experience

Look for an attorney that specifically offers representation for cases such as yours. That way, you can rest assured your lawyer will know how to handle the details of your case. Find a criminal lawyer, not a civil lawyer. While each case is unique, it is important to find an attorney with experience and knowledge in your type of criminal law for the best outcomes.

  1. A personal touch

Settlement-mill type law firms will not provide the kind of individual attention and support you need during this difficult time. When you are facing criminal charges, your future is on the line. Only trust your case to a lawyer who has the ability to offer personal attention to each client.

  1. Aggressive defense strategies

Finally, your attorney should be able to create a smart defense strategy on your behalf. Your lawyer should listen to your story, take in the most important details, review your criminal history and tailor a defense that is ideally suited for your unique needs. Look for an attorney with the skill, experience and resources to craft a strong defense.
