I joined the Collegiate Recovery Community as part of a plea deal that started my sobriety journey this time. A couple of years into my time at the CRC, I was hosting what we call family dinner every single Sunday at my house. In November, the person in charge of the CRC, some of their support staff, and my mentor in peer education told me that urgently we had to meet. We got on this call and they were like, “No, we cannot tell you who it was, but you have been accused of a Title IX violation.”

My original allegation was after one of these family dinners, me and this individual ended up in a physical position where they were on their stomach on the floor in my living room, and I was saying, “I could hurt you right now if I really wanted to.” It’s simply a soul-crushing, horrible thing to be accused of, and it’s an even worse thing to know that every single person involved in this process believed that it’s true. I was isolated. I felt rejected. I felt like my future was at risk. I didn’t know what to do next.

My dad is a phenomenal attorney. He knew Kim Fry, and when I told him I didn’t know what to do, and I felt alone, he was like, “You just need to call Kim and have a conversation.” Throughout the course, I went from feeling completely alone and misunderstood to feeling like I had an ally in the process.
